Organizer: The Gila National Forest
Location: The Gila National Forest,Silver City and Surrounding Area,NM,88061
Fire danger is high on the Gila National Forest causing the potential for wildfire activity to increase as summer approaches and conditions become drier.
Although the Gila National Forest is not under any fire restrictions at this time, fire managers are monitoring conditions closely and will continue to evaluate the need to go into fire restrictions as fire season progresses.
Memorial Day draws many visitors to the forest for the holiday weekend. The public is urged to be extra careful if fire is part of a recreational activity, such as cook-outs and campfires. Embers can be carried by the wind to nearby grass fields and forested areas, resulting in a wildfire that can pose a threat to people and property.
Make your outdoor excursion a happy and safe one by following these fire prevention tips:
• Clear a campfire site down to bare soil.
• Keep all flammable objects away from fire.
• Keep your campfire small.
• Never leave a campfire unattended even while you sleep.

In the Glenwood Ranger District
The Hickle Fire is 20 miles northwest of Glenwood at 85 acres with 15 personnel assigned to it.
In the Wilderness Ranger District
The Monument Fire is 14 miles northeast of Mimbres in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness between the North Fork of the Mimbres River and Monument Canyon. It is currently at 11 acres and is only displaying moderate fire activity.
The Information Officer reminds the public that although there have been scattered rain showers throughout the Gila National Forest, conditions still largely remain dry and prone to fire.
